Why you shouldn’t watch good movies?

It is 5:30 PM. The sky is trying to decide what it wants to be; maybe the sky is adulting. It has the afternoon’s anger wrapped up in the evening’s serenity.

Nonetheless, do you remember that I hate words? How confusing they are? There’s one thing which I don’t like more than words. That’s the effect those words have on you. Take any instrument which is loaded with potent words, you’ll realise that they’ll end up spoiling you. Be it music, movie, or poem, everything is set to destroy you. The smaller it is, the bigger the impact.

Allow me to showcase the brutality imposed onto us by these agents of change who happen to live beside us with the spell of immortality. Let’s talk about movies!

‘Why do I and everyone I love, pick people who treat us like we’re nothing.’
‘We accept the love we think we deserve.’

Heard this somewhere? This is the conversation between Sam and Charlie, the leading pair in the movie ‘The perks of being a wallflower.’ This very stanza is the problem. It rips open your soul, tickles with it, and then when you decide to stand up to its atrocity, it leaves you there, unarmed and clueless.

Perks of being a wallflower poster

How can someone say something you knew existed but could never think of, in a way which leaves you dumbfounded? Who exactly gave these people the right to expose my inner self without even letting me know?

‘We accept the love we think we deserve.’
Now, read this again. Felt something? No? Okay, let me help you.

Imagine yourselves in grayscale. Wear anything sober. Hold a cigar and place yourself in a room filled with cigar’s smoke. Make sure your eyes have a shade of red. One which says that something is wrong with you, but it’s not the smoke. Hold a glass with a thick base. Put two ice cubes in it so that they are in close vicinity but aren’t hugging each other. There’s tension between them which is diluted once you pour fine bourbon in the glass.

Alcohol solves a lot of things, the tension between ice cubes is just one of them. Now, someone in the background says that movie dialogue in a very low bassy voice. Exactly how you always wanted someone to narrate your life. Except you never wanted to tell you that. Because you never knew it existed.

Once you’ve heard that line, something hits you. The blow is massive. You feel a massive weight on your heart. It is pulling you down. You’ve a free fall. You don’t know where this ends. Congratulations, you are now aware of what abyss feels like. You should feel bad about falling into an abyss and receiving a big blow, but you feel good.

You’re confused but your smile tells otherwise. You’re now even more confused. Confusion never puts a smile on your face. Then why is this happening now? Is it because of that line? But I never asked for it. I never wanted someone to answer the question I never knew was bothering me.

Did Stephen Chbosky read my mind? Heck, I never met him in my life. How can his creation have such a deep impact on my life?

This one line made me experience a myriad of emotions. It was supposed to be a simple movie about a guy named Charlie who was having a tough time at school.

The movie began like any other movie. However, as it progressed it made me question a lot and made me feel even more. Maybe I agreed to all of it by agreeing to watch it. But there was no warning in the beginning which could’ve prepared me from what lied ahead of me.

This is what good movies do to you. They join pieces in your mind which couldn’t have been joined otherwise. You’re little less twisted from within than before.

This is what I am scared of the most. Being healed from within without being broken in the first place. Feeling more than I know I am capable of. Experiencing what I can’t explain.

And the biggest sin these work of art do to you?

They leave you wanting for more!

Good one. Just one doubt, are you ‘little less twisted from within than before’ or more twisted given you now have one more perspective to look at the reality? ;P
