Take my word on this one

Written by:

Word – is a single word which defines the word. Two words – these are two words which are now referring to two words. This is what words are – crazy! That is why I don’t like words. It’s a bit weird. Maybe saying that I don’t like democracy while living in one – umm, I don’t think this was the best example.

No worries, I’ll try again. My problem is that I think words are misleading. They don’t do justice to what they are supposed to do. Get it? Words always deceive. There is no way I can paint the exact picture in your head unless I really paint. And I’m bad at painting.

Let’s do an exercise. Imagine a blue boat sailing in a vast ocean. Now what color was the ocean? Blue, yes? And the boat? Again blue, yes? Then why were you able to see both? Did you imagine different shades of blue? Most probably yes. And this is where I rest my case. You took the liberty to comprehend the sentence on your own. My meaning of words will always be different from your meaning of words because it is all subjective. That’s the real culprit – subjectivity. Life would’ve been so much easier if this subjectivity hadn’t sliced itself off from objectivity.

Poems are the worst. They make the world look so easy. Two couplets of ten words each could explain the meaning of the whole world to you and yet here I am struggling to make a point even after two hundred words. Words lie. Yet you end up smiling after reading a poem or prose most of the time.

I’ve always struggled to find the right words to explain what I feel. I think I fail at it miserably. A few years back I hiked atop Chandrashila peak, almost. During the hike I could see vast expanse of snow covered peaks around me. I was elated. My joy knew no bound. It was such a delightful experience. I saw unicorns farting rainbows around me. That was my level of happiness. Here I’ve thrown every word I can to make you understand what I was feeling, yet I doubt you would’ve understood what I felt that day. Everyone out there reading this would comprehend it in a different way and then would believe that they understood what I was going through.

That’s a lie! How could you possibly understand without truly experiencing it? Ah! Subjectivity sucks.

Mathematics is such a beauty. She helps you uncover the truth. Absolute truth. The finite truth. The truth! You would not find a single different version of a single theorem. Whatever is written in the rule is the first and last interpretation to it. Either you agree to it or discover a bigger truth. 2 + 2 = 4 in every language. Only the way of expressing it would change, but not the value. Such simplicity. When are we making such beautiful humans?

My rift with subjectivity crossed all boundaries when I was preparing for CAT. There’s a verbal ability section in the exam. Its sole purpose is to judge how good you are with words and comprehension. Never have I ever encountered a worse examination section than that.

It’s all messed up. The section starts in a very happy mood. It makes you think, ‘Oi mate, this is a shubuly-dubuly easy peazy section, even your little willy wonka could do it. ‘ And kaboom! You fall for it. You don’t even fall this hard in love. Bass drops are so tiny in front of this. Adele’s sky fall was probably the kindergarten version of it.

Here’s a sample question:
Q. ‘Albert was a genius. He lived with his parents at the age of 35. He particularly loved apples.’ Now choose the most appropriate sentence among the following:
1. Because he liked apples, he was a genius
2. Living with his parents made him a genius, as he got their blessings
3. Albert did not give the mass-energy equation
4. Albert never had a girlfriend

Whosoever created the question had an answer in mind which is correct according to him. How on Earth are we supposed to find what he/she thinks? If men could read other’s minds, the women would’ve been so much happier in relationships.

In spite of this, you can find hundreds of people who would argue that the correct answer is either option 1 or option 2. All the geniuses in the world are geniuses because they are geniuses, what does it have to do with an apple or his parent’s blessings?

I would always argue with the professor while he convinced me that his logic is the only correct logic and I should agree to it to get the correct answer. They judge our subjective ability in an objective way. Wow. So amazing. The logical instruments of the world just put a revolver on their head and shot themselves. Absurd is the word for this. (Only if it correctly captures my anger for this weirdness)

Judging subjectivity in an objective way is like Henry Ford’s quote on why he only makes black Model T, “You can have any colour as long it is black.”

I’m re-emphasizing again that words are the cleverest creation of humans. They’re the con-men everyone loves.

Wait. Hold on. Did I ever tell you that I hate words?

Did you really hike the Chandrashila top? Or is it just a mere word play?

I’d rate it as best piece of writing that I have read yours. Really liked the beginning and the way you were explaining the failure of a language in explaining things because of varying way it can be comprehended.
