Book review: Indian Icon, A Cult called Royal Enfield

“It’s really an organic bike, it makes you feel it. We call it kick-start my heart.” these words by Bobbee Singh have resonated in my head since I heard them 4 years back when I watched this documentary – Old Delhi Motorcycles The Film.

Whether you like the bike or not you will agree with me that Royal Enfield is not just a bike company, it is an emotion.

The book starts with the account of a Bobbee Singh and other similar passionate madmen and women who value the Royal Enfield Bullet more than anything else in their lives.

Soon after the narration switches to point where it all began – the shaky finances of the Eicher group. No detail is spared from the readers and the narrator takes us through the ups and downs in a gripping way. At no point will you feel lethargic or bored of the facts presented in the book.

You’re taken through the ups and downs faced by the company in the last 20 years and how a young guy, Siddharth Lal was able to resurrect the brand from ashes. If you’re thinking that the story is going to be all happy, think again. The company has had more twists and turns in the last 20 years than an average Indian daily soap.

The narrative is simple and story weaved around the facts is so good that the book is almost unputdownable. (I completed this book in one sitting)

You’ll get to learn a lot of things about the Royal Enfield brand and will appreciate the bikes even more once you’re done with this book. Heck! I even made up my mind to buy one Classic 350 after completing this book. Such is the effect of this book.

What I liked about this book was that it covered the development of all the products which have come out of Enfield’s stable, except the latest Meteor 350. This is not just the story of how a brand was rebuild, but an example of what you can achieve if you put your heart and soul into it.

Who should read this?
Anyone who is looking to know more about the iconic Indian brand, the Royal Enfield.
